Dear student,
As promised, today we shall discuss the Reading portion of the exam in greater detail. As I mentioned in the previous article, you can opt for either Academic Reading or General Training.
In the Academic Reading portion you will have three sections with 40 questions. There will be three texts, which are taken from various media (magazines, newspapers, journals, books). Those texts are on topics of general interest, so you do not have to learn specialized vocabulary. Your English knowledge will be tested through various types of questions: multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), identifying writer’s stance (Yes/No/Not given), matching information/headings, matching sentence ending, sentence completion, summary completion/table completion/diagram label completion, short-answer questions.
In the General Training Reading you will have three sections with 40 questions. Texts are taken from notices, leaflets, newspapers, instruction manuals, etc. The first section focuses on text relevant to basic linguistic survival in English, the students having to provide factual information. The second feature is focused on the work context, thus the texts are more complex. Last but not least, the third section contains longer texts with a more complex structure. The types of exercises are the same as in the Academic reading portion: multiple choice, chart completion, etc.
And now here are some exercises to prepare you for the IELTS (though the exam does not have a specific grammar portion, it is tested indirectly).
